スウェーデンからクリスマスレターが届きました - Message from founder LENA

After a very grey November, this year unusual warm, but still very dark and boring December is very welcomed to bring light into our spirits.

Christmas in Sweden and in the rest of Scandinavia means that we can fill our houses and gardens with festive lighting and flowers for the season as amaryllis, helleborus and Christmas star,  . For most of us it is not the actually celebration of Jesus, but a tradition since long time. But still many people are visiting the very early morning mass in the church Christmas day.

You can find Christmas trees in the squares of even the smallest village or city and we even have a big Christmas tree in our very small village of Enhörna.

Here in Scandinavia we celebrate the Christmas evening, the 24th of December and not as many other countries do, the 25th.

Center of celebration is Christmas dinner where you have a huge smorgasbord with herring, salmon, salads, sausages of different kind, meatballs and of course the traditional grated ham as the centerpiece.

The herring are often accompanied by snaps. A small glass filled with strong vodka with different flavors from herbs. Special Christmas beer and Julmust, a traditional Swedish non-alcoholic brew enjoyed at Christmas and Easter. 

After dinner I believe 90% of all families looks at a TV show that has been sent since early 60s with a mix of Disney cartoons.

Then we also have coffee with ginger bread cookies and lots and lots of candy. Mainly chocolate, marzipan figures and caramel.

 Then all children cannot wait any longer for the Christmas gifts. Some families have Santa Claus coming to visit with a sack filled with gifts, otherwise they are already laying under the Christmas tree.

 The Christmas holidays are beside Christmas eve, first and second day of Christmas where you normally not go to work. Depending on when day of week many Swedes have part of their paid leave during the days between Christmas and New year so there are many companies that is more or less shut down during that period. Starting again 2nd of January.

今年は例年にないほど暖かく、そして曇りがちの薄暗い11月で、そんな調子で暗くて退屈な12月がやってきたけれど、やっぱりこの月は私たちにの心がパッと明るくなるような月なのです。

なぜならクリスマスがあるからです。

スウェーデンを始め北欧諸国のクリスマスは、まず自宅や庭をクリスマススターをはじめとしたクリスマスイルミネーションとアマリリス、クリスマスローズ等の季節の花でいっぱいにすることから始まります。

そして最近ではもうみんな敬虔なキリスト教徒ではないので、そんなに宗教的な儀式は行わないのだけど、やはり慣習として25日の朝には教会のミサに置く人が多いですね。

またクリスマスツリーがどんな小さな村でも、その中心の広場にたてられていて、その村々や町のシンボルとなっています。

スカンジナビアのクリスマスのちょっと変わっているところは、他の欧米諸国が25日のクリスマスの日をメインにお祝いするのに対して、24日のイブを盛大にお祝いするというところがあります。25日の夜にはクリスマスディナーを家族みんなで囲むのが定番。

料理は大きなテーブルにビュッフェスタイルでおかれて、みんなで取り合いながらワイワイやるのが特徴。

メニューはニシンの酢漬けやスモークサーモン、サラダ、ソーセージ、そして欠かせないミートボール。メインは伝統的なロースハムが提供されて、これをみんなでお皿に取り合いながら、楽しみます。

小さなコップにはいろんなハーブフレーバーのウォッカが注がれていて、それ以外にもクリスマスビールやユールムストというスウェーデン伝統のバタービールみたいなノンアルコール飲料も振舞われます。

そしてディナーを堪能した後は、だいたい90％ぐらいの家族がテレビで60年代からのディスニーのアニメ番組を見るのがちょっと変わった特徴かな。

テレビを見ながら、コーヒータイム。ジンジャーブレッドやキャンディ、マジパン、キャラメルといったスイーツをたっぷり食べるのもまた楽しみの一つ。

その頃になると子供たちはクリスマスプレゼントで待ちきれなくなってきます。

家族によってはみんながよく知っているサンタが家までやってきてくれて、プレゼントをもらったり、そうでなければクリスマスツリーの下に置いてあるプレゼントを開け始めます。

そうやって24日の夜は過ぎていき、25日は公休でゆっくりします。

あとはその人の有給休暇次第で、だいたいはみんなそのまま有給を使って1月1日ぐらいまで休みます。

そして2日からみんな仕事に戻る感じで、スウェーデンのクリスマス休暇は過ぎていきます。
